A Plumber for Blocked Drains, Not a Drainage Firm
A blocked drain announces itself quietly — a basin that empties slowly, a gurgle from the plughole, a toilet that rises before it falls. Left alone, quiet becomes waste water on the floor. Daley Plumbing & Gas clears blocked sinks, basins, baths, showers, toilets, traps and accessible waste pipes across Cheadle, Stockport and south Manchester.
We’re plumbers, not a drainage company, and that’s worth saying plainly. Most household blockages sit in a trap or waste pipe on your side of the property boundary — plumber territory. If yours turns out to be in a shared or public sewer, we’ll tell you it’s a United Utilities matter rather than charge you to prod pipework that isn’t ours to fix.
Waste water backing up right now? Our emergency plumber service treats calls like that as urgent — we aim to respond within 1 hour from our Cheadle base.

Honest About Whose Job It Is
If a blockage sits in a shared or public sewer, we say so — reporting it to United Utilities is free, and you shouldn't pay us for their pipework.

Over 15 Years in the Trade
More than 15 years of plumbing means very few blockages we haven't met before — and a fair idea of where to look before a single trap comes off.
Your Side of the Boundary — and United Utilities' Side
Drainage responsibility splits at the property boundary. As general guidance, pipework serving only your home — right down to the private drain inside your boundary — is the property owner’s to fix. Shared drains carrying waste from more than one property, and the public sewers themselves, belong to United Utilities in this region, and reporting a fault to them is free.
Our part is the plumbing side of the owner’s half: blocked sinks, baths, showers and toilets, and the traps and accessible waste pipes that serve them. Why would a plumber spell out the rest? Because paying us to investigate pipework the water company must fix helps nobody. If the signs point beyond your boundary — several fixtures backing up at once, or neighbours struggling at the same time — we’ll say so before any money changes hands.
What Not to Put Down There
Most blockages we clear in Stockport homes were years in the making. A few habits prevent the majority:
- Keep fat, oil and grease out of the kitchen sink — they set hard in cold pipes. Let them cool, then bin them.
- Flush nothing but toilet paper. Wipes — even those labelled flushable — cotton buds and sanitary products are the classic culprits.
- Fit a hair catcher over shower and bath plugholes; hair binds with soap into a stubborn plug.
- Run hot water through the kitchen sink after washing up to move residues along.
None of it costs much, and all of it beats a call-out.

Darryl never fails to deliver and impress; both with his speed of response, quality of work and accommodating attitude. Having quoted for the work within twenty-four hours of contact, a mutually convenient date was scheduled and Darryl and his team completed an entire central heating refresh (excluding boiler) on our daughter’s recently purchased terraced house in a day thus enabling us to arrange for other tradesmen to come on site. Thoroughly recommended. Mike and Tanya CarrollPosted on Google![]()

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to the questions we hear most.
Who is responsible for a blocked drain — me, my landlord or the water company?
As a rule of thumb, pipework serving only your home and sitting inside its boundary is the property owner’s job — in a rented house that usually means the landlord, though a tenant who caused the blockage may be liable under the tenancy. Shared drains and public sewers belong to United Utilities. We handle the plumbing side of that first category — fixtures, traps and accessible waste pipes.
Can I try a chemical unblocker before calling you?
On a slow-draining sink, a shop unblocker is a fair first try — follow the label, never mix two products, and don’t pour in dose after dose. On a fully blocked toilet it mostly sits in the standing water, doing little and leaving a caustic pool for whoever works on it next. Tell us if you’ve used one.
How quickly can you get to a blocked drain in Stockport?
That depends on what’s blocked. A single slow basin can usually wait for a booked visit; a household’s only toilet out of action, or waste water backing up into the home, is treated as urgent. For urgent calls we aim to respond within 1 hour, and Stockport is only a short drive from our Cheadle base.
What does it cost to clear a blocked drain?
Where the blockage sits matters more than which fixture is blocked. A clogged trap under a basin is a short job; something further along the waste run takes longer to reach, and access and timing play their part. Describe the symptoms when you call and we’ll give you a free quote before anything starts.
When is a blockage United Utilities' job instead of mine?
When it sits in a drain shared with other properties, or in the public sewer itself — both belong to United Utilities in this region, and reporting a fault to them costs nothing. Tell-tale signs are several fixtures backing up at once, or neighbours having the same trouble at the same time. If we spot that on a visit, we’ll point you their way.
